Golding's images often use younger female characters and have been critisized in the past for being sexually explicit. 16 Arrested in California Beach Brawl

A huge brawl broke out on Labour Day at a San Diego beach. Police had to use tear gas to break up the fight. It's estimated that over 500 people were involved in the fight, but only six or seven people responsible for starting it. City councilman Kevin Faulconer said alcohol did play a part in the fight.

The crowd was estimated about 500 people, authorities said. A police helicopter hovered over the beach while officers on the ground formed a skirmish line along the boardwalk.

Gustavo Villoldo is ready to put the past behind him. He has been holding onto a snipped piece of Che Guevara's hair since the rebel leader was buried. He also has a scrapbook of his mission as a former CIA-Bolivian army leader, which he has put up for sale --alongside the hair -- for an October 25th and 26th auction.

Besides the thick strand of Che's sunburned hair, the auction winner inherits:

• The original map used by Villoldo and the Bolivian army to hunt down Che and his band of rebels, including the famed Tania. All had come to Bolivia to spark another Cuban-style revolution.

• Telegrams Villoldo received from then-Bolivian President Rene Barrientos about the progress of the mission.

• Photographs of a dead, shirtless Che on display in a laundry room sink in Bolivia. Prints and copyrights are included.

• Intercepted messages between Che and his rebels, which eventually led to their deaths after gun battles with the Bolivian army.

• And one of two sets of Che's fingerprints taken before burial. Villoldo kept one; Cuba has the other. Che's hands were eventually severed to prevent Cuba from identifying him easily.

"Halloween" in September brings blockbuster earnings

I would never go watch this movie because I am terrified of horror flicks, but obviously I am not the norm. Rob Zombie's Halloween set box office records this weekend, a new record for the Labour Day holiday. Although the movie got horrible reviews and ticket sales collapsed after the weekend, it's still notable. What is also interesting is that Hollywood actually attributed the overall shift in increased box office sales to the weather. Variety reports that the extreme weather conditions were sending more people to the box office.

The R-rated pic directed by Rob Zombie and based on the chilling 1978 original made a better than expected $26.7 mil for the 3-day weekend and should climb to $33.3 mil for the 4-day Friday through Labor Day.

I can't believe that it's Labour Day and that summer is pretty much over. The only thing to console me at this point is to recap the music festivals that sadly signal the end of the glorious sunny days and the easy leaving. So, all weekend I was listening to St. Vincent, who happened to play at this year's Bumbershoot in Seattle. If you get a chance, make sure to check them out. Other than that, Joss Stone, Fergie, The Shins, John Legend, Kings of Leon and many other awesome bands performed.

What we found was Annie Clark and our newest musical crush. Ms. Clark aka St. Vincent has a sweet and strained but soulful voice that can turn a song about Mary and her lambs into a surreal and smoky anthem. And did we mention she can play guitar?

If you happen to be up this Friday, August 31st at 4 am you could see a meteor that is 2,000 years-old. The Aurigid meteor has a narrow tail and will approah the Earth from teh Auriga constellation. If you spot this meteor, you'll be one of four people alive who have seen this meteor shower.

This very rare shower will occur again on 1 September 2007. A brief shower of tens of meteors will radiate from the constellation of Auriga, many as bright as the brighter stars in the sky. The Earth will be in the thick of it during the one hour centered on 04:33 a.m. PDT.

Surfers stop Superferry in Hawaii

Over a dozen environemental protestors on surfboards tried to stop the second voyage of the first ever passenger ferry service, Hawaii Superferry. The inter-island ferry that makes daily runs between the Hawaiian Islands made its first voyage a few days ahead of schedule and offers service for only $5. On both trips, over 500 people and 150 cars were loaded onto the ship. Attorneys for the environmental organizations are trying to stop the ferry from doing business until environmental studies are completed.

The protesters and environmentalists argue that the ferry's plan to ply 400 miles of Hawaii waters each day endangers whales, threatens to spread invasive species and will worsen traffic and pollution.

Our natural tendencies to pick up a blue shirt for a little boy and a pink skirt for a girl may not be (completely) at the mercy of the marketing gods, this according to a study publsihed in Current Biology. The study examined British and Chinese volunteers -- both men and women -- to assess whether certain colour preferences were culturally shaped. And although both sexes tend to prefer blue, women picked the redder shades of blue -- more purple hues, while the men picked a blue-green shade. Maybe this is the reason why men that wear pink shirts often give off a certain "vibe."

Ling speculates that the color preference and women's ability to better discriminate red from green could have evolved due to sex-specific divisions of labor: while men hunted, women gatherered, and they had to be able to spot ripe berries and fruits. Another theory suggests that women, as caregivers who need to be particularly sensitive to, say, a child flushed with fever, have developed a sensitivity to reddish changes in skin color, a skill that enhances their abilities as the “emphathizer.”

I'm moving to Finland: 44 days of vacation days off a year

Sadly, North American culture promotes the more you work the more your worth mentality. And while some people really enjoy their jobs and do work because they enjoy it, most people work as much as they do to barely survive. So, vacation time and a break from the job is always a welcome thought. And according to a Mercer Survey, people in Finland have it the best. Finnish workers get 44 days off each year. That's a month of vacation days and 14 holiday days. By comparison, Canadian workers get 10 vacations days with an average of 10 public holidays. The U.S. comes in at 15 vacation days off and 10 public holidays as a bonus. It seems North Americans are working for the weekend.

Virgin olive oil helps fight blood clots

The Mediterranean Diet has always been tauted as one of the healthiest for not only keeping your weight in check, but also because of its preventative properties. Now, a study out of Spain confirms some of these findings. New evidence shows that virgin olive oil, which contains phenols may help fight blood clots in people with high cholesterol. Phenols and inhibitors aside, olive oil is delicious. I guess it's time to drench away and not feel bad about it.

Two hours after the high-phenol meal, study participants' concentrations of factor VII antigen, which promotes blood clotting, were lower compared with the low-phenol group. The high-phenol group also experienced a greater drop in the activity of another clot promoter, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1.

This year's September issue of Vogue, which is the issue for advertisers to plug their products in is a massive 727 pages. This is the largest ad issue ever, but the interesting fact is that many of the advertisers were drawn to advertise bacause Vogue debuted a new online and interactive website called ShopVogue.TV. This website allows anyone to buy the products that are advertised in the issue, to view runway shows and to share their own fashion photos.

The feature, ShopVogue.TV, offers links to purchase the products featured in the magazine’s print ads, while simultaneously showing videos of runway shows, fashion ad campaigns and serial shows created by Vogue.

We Are Not Satisfied: Save Darfur!

I attended the Save Darfur Conference in Montreal this past weekend as a performer, but came away with so much more about this issue that is in dire need of attention. Baryl Wajsman, the Editor of The Suburban and also with the Institute for Public Affairs of Montreal organized the event, where a distinguished panel of speakers debated and informed hundreds about the situation in Darfur. Speakers from Save Darfur Canada, the SCLC, the UN and other human rights activists like Nazanin Afshin-Jam, a former Miss Canada all spoke about what we as citizens can do -- everyday--to place pressure on the Sudanese government to stop violating international humanitarian laws and killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

Spain is well know for it's delicious and unique tapas, one of which includes the famous Jamon Serrano, a cured ham that many tourists travel hours to try. Now, hard core foodies can add a new "must-try" delicay to their list. The 2006 Alba Quercus Reseve made by the Maldonado family will retail for over $2,100 per leg when it becomes available in 2008. It's limited eidtion so make the order now. Maldonado says this is the most important ham in Spain so he'll only make 80-100 legs.

Hundreds of Saudi camels die from mystery ailment

Over 200 camels have died of a mystery ailment in Saudi Arabia. King Abdullah has promised compensation to the owners of the camels, who say the real number of deaths is actually higher. Ministry officals are blaming the deaths on bad feed supply.

Camels are big business in the desert kingdom and are traded by Bedouin tribes for thousands of dollars each. The animals are used for racing and their meat is also prized.

Is J.K. Rowling writing detective novel

J.K. Rowling's neighbour says his wife spotted the Harry Potter author in an Edinburgh cafe writing a crime detective novel, of all things. Although the report which appeared on the Sunday Times has not been confirmed, Rowling wrote many of the early Harry Potter books in those cafes in order to save on her heating bill. Today she is Britain's richest woman billing in at $1 billion, according to Forbes.

In an interview with The Associated Press last month, Rowling said she believed she was unlikely to repeat the success of the Potter series, but confirmed she had plans to work on new books.
