Starving for Sanjaya

American Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar still hasn't been kicked off the show. No matter how many hunger strikes have been proclaimed and threats of "no shaving until he is gone" have been shouted, he is still makig it big. In my opinion, the negative backlash against this young Seattle area boy is what is driving his fan base to keep him on. He can't sing, and frankly he should NOT have been put through the Hollywood round. But as we all know, American Idol is a popularity contest and Sanjaya is popular. We'll just have to wait and see what happens next week.

Los Angeles, March 30 'J', the MySpace blogger, who has been on a hunger strike for nearly two weeks in efforts to have Indian American Sanjaya Malakar voted off 'American Idol', was not heard of after the last episode of the TV contest.

remember guys, i am simply doing this because i don't think Sanjaya is right for American Idol. i do not "hate" him as many people have tried to claim i do. i actually don't hate anyone. i am still feeling kind of weak but okay. not at the point of hospitalization yet, thank goodness. it won't be long now until Sanjaya is gone!

Bono gets knighthood, but don't call him Sir

Bono has accepted an honorary knighthood in Dublin from British Ambassador David Reddaway. The U2 singer's new title is Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Although you won't be able to call him Sir, because he is not a British Citizen.

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair described the star as an inspiration in the fight against global poverty, in a letter that was read out at the small gathering.

Plastic grocery bags banned in San Francisco

San Fransisco will become the first U.S. city to ban plastic grocery bags. The mayor is expected to sign the ban after the law approved it 10-1. The petroleum based plastic bags are blamed for littering streets and choking marine life. Grocers argue that plastic bags made of products that break down, reusable cloth or recycled paper can be used.

San Francisco would be the first U.S. city to adopt such a rule if Mayor Gavin Newsom signs the ban as expected.

Britney's back and she looks good

Britney Spears is out of rehab and she is making news for shedding at least 10 lbs during her month long visit. Her face is starting to look more like her younger, teeny bopper self. She's back to work, rehearsing her dance moves. Could this be the beginning of a beautiful comeback?

The auto-balded Britney, who reportedly lost ten pounds in rehab, was snapped in a stylish snap-brim houndstooth fedora and a hazardously horrible hot pink french tipped manicure, while outside a dance studio where she's been rehearsing for the past few days.

MIKA does Los Angeles

Mika the 22-year-old boy wonder of Britain is yet another transplant slash pop-sensation that Americans are going crazy over. Radio stations in North America can't stop playing his Grace Kelly song, which is very catchy in sugary, sticky sweet kind of way. The Socialite's Life went to his first concert over the weekend in LA. Read on for the review.

Mika is a true young internationalist. Born in Beirut in the middle of the 80s, Mika’s family soon found themselves having to move to Paris at the height of the war. When his father was subsequently taken hostage and held at the American embassy in Kuwait the family eventually settled in London.

A year without toilet paper

Colin Beaven, 43, a writer and Michelle Colin, 39, a senior writer at Business Week, along with their two-year old daughter, Isabella, are living the next year -- in the middle of Manhattan -- without toilet paper. As bizarre as this may seem, not having toilet paper is only a small part of a bigger plan called No Impact. You see, Colin and his family are going to live the next year with minimal or no impact to the environment. Although the rules are evolving, the loose descriptors are as follows:
  • eating only food organically grown withing a 250-mile radius of Manhattan
  • no shopping for anything except for food
  • producing no trash (compost is okay)
  • using no paper
  • using no-carbon fueled transportation
Some of the most entertaining questions posed on his blog about this "experiment" truly depict the difficulties all of us face when trying to be more environmentally conscious in a city: simple questions like what they use to wipe, toys for his daughter, books he reads and making vinegar. I admire his efforts, at least he is trying to do something.

Together the couple discard their lightbulbs, disposable razors and olive oil, vowing to live green. They even confiscate the cleaning lady's paper towels, though in a touching scene, lit only by flickering beeswax candles, the woman makes a plea to keep her beloved vacuum.

“That’s the thing about this current wave of environmentalism,” he continued. “It’s not about, how do we protect some abstract pristine space? It’s what can real people do in their home or office or whatever.

The philosophy is based not only on restricting consumption but on changing what is consumed so that it actually helps or at least does not hinder the world.

Forbidden rice..and egg rolls

A consumer group has found that Chinese food is really not all that healthy for us. Not sure if I missed something there all these years, as I never ate Chinese food for the health benefits. Nevertheless, now I know exactly how much sodium, calories and fats I am stuffing into my face when I'm enjoying an egg roll. This study will most likely not act as a deterrent to our love of Chinese food, so here are a few tips recommended to make the meal healthier.
  • Look for dishes that are less meat centric and more veggie oriented
  • No deep fried stuff or dim sum
  • Hold the sauce
  • Limit salt
  • Share your meal
So, I think I'll see you guys at sushi...

Also surprising were some appetizers: An order of six steamed pork dumplings has 500 calories, and there's not much difference -- about 10 calories per dumpling -- if they're pan-fried.

Source: edition.cnn.com

The reports show that a typical battered, fried chicken dish with vegetables has 1,300 calories, 3,200 milligrams of sodium and 11 grams of saturated fat.

Am I hot enough?

As soon as I get some "hot" photos together, I will apply to hotenough.org, a dating website exclusively created for good looking and fit singles. I am very nervous, I must admit. What if the judging committee thinks I am not an 8? You see, you have to be an 8 to be accepted to the club. Or what if they say "you're only a 5, Victoria..go back to those other not hot dating websites." That would sting for sure.

Nevertheless, I will try it out, you see I have dabbled in online dating a little (3 days) and I did find that most of the members that I viewed were not really that attractive. Sure, we shared similar interests and had common life goals, but I wouldn't have wanted to look at them for too long. And this exact same thought was what motivated Jason Pellegrino and his partner to create the website. They both rate over an 8 and felt there was a real market for this type of a business. We'll just have to see. I will keep you all posted about what my rating is and if anything comes of this adventure.

Jason Pellegrino (an 8.2 on the attractiveness scale) says the problem with Internet dating services is not enough really hot-looking people. So he and a business partner have created HotEnough.org, a sort of online version of Studio 54, the exclusive '70s disco where gaining admission was a pitiless Darwinian exercise. HotEnough.org is for "fit, good-looking" people.

Sashay, Chante: Toronto style

Hype, Chutzpah and Haute Couture. This is what it was all about at Toronto's Loreal Fashion Week that just wrapped-up. After the fact, the blogs are filled with juicy gossip and people are out of control in a good way. America's Next Top Model judge Nole Marin was spotted at Mackage, while bloggers like Human Nature went to the Versace show and surviced to tell us about the glamourous madness.

Anyone in Toronto have scoop for me?

Ellen DeGeneres' June wedding

Although it hasn't been confirmed by either Ellen's people or Portia's people, there are rumours of a possible summertime wedding for the two. Ellen and Portia have been dating since 2004, and "currently live in Santa Barbara with 2 dogs and 2 cats."

A source told the National Enquirer magazine: "Portia demanded that Ellen marry her. After lots of talk and plenty of hints, Portia finally confronted Ellen right after the Oscars about making a commitment."

Source: lse.co.uk

"Ellen's hiatus starts at the end of May, and her show doesn't start up again until August. That gives Ellen some much-needed time with her new bride.
