Fisherman reels in piranha from Carolina river

"Why don't lawyers eat piranhas? Professional courtesy."

Wildlife officials told Melton on Saturday that he caught a 1 pound, 4 ounce piranha that was probably dumped in the river. Officials said the fish was likely put there by someone who kept it as a pet and later dumped it into local waters.

Case of the disappearing beer kegs

Stolen kegs, [empty steel kegs] are costing American beer companies over $50 million a year in lost revenue. The steel kegs are sold as scrap metal and scrap metal recyclers are revealing in the rewards. Now there is a bit of war of words going between the steel folk and the beer folk, as the beer folk want the selling of empty kegs to be regulated. As over 40% of the beer industry's revenue comes from the sale of beer in kegs, which is triple the industry average craft brewers are anxious to solve this problem.

The beer industry's main trade group, the Beer Institute, noticed the problem in the past few years as it saw more brewers reporting missing kegs, resulting in an industrywide loss of up to $50 million a year.

Who's the top dog muncher?

Who will be this year's champ of the annual Coney Island hot-dog eating showdown? Will it be Takeru Kobayashi aka Balls Deep or Joey Chestnut? Kobayashi from Japan is the title holder who's been battling a sore jaw and is the underdog for today's competition. Specialists have been treating Kobayashi with "jaw-thritis" and he's even had a tooth removed to ease the pain and to help him prepare for the competition. Chestnut, who is American is Kobayashi's biggest competition out of the 17 overall competitors. He inhaled 59 1/2 hot dogs in 12 minutes, exceeding Kobayashi's record of 53 1/2 dogs in the same time. As a side statistic, Americans this year will consume over 150 million franks this Independence Day. They will spend over $176 million dollars on hamburger patties and $120 million on chips and dip. Booze gets $303 million while watermelons come in at a sweet $149 million. The total bill? $2.5 billion.

For a month now, it's been clear that today's 92nd edition of the world's most-famous celebration of mastication would be one to remember.

Takeru Kobayashi, six-time world record hot dog eater, is claiming to have a jaw injury which may hamper his competition today at Nathan's Famous in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York.

No fireworks for many this July 4th

Major droughts and the huge risks of fires are causing many communities to scrap the annual July 4th fireworks. Instead, they are replacing them with laser light shows, which is definitely not the same as the the real thing. Burbank, California and Woodstock, Georgia are just some of the communities that made the call to nix the fireworks. For Burbank residents, it's the first time the fireworks have been canceled since the city started holding them in 1994. Other states imposing the ban on the 'works are Kentucky, Alabama and North Carolina. Hey, at least there is still a light show...

The July Fourth parade and festival are still on in Woodstock, but residents worried about dry conditions wrote to the city recommending that the fireworks be postponed

Happy 4th America!

Happy Independence Day America! This July 4th marks the 219th birthday for our friendly neighbours and all the blogs are going

absolutely ballistic with pride and joy to celebrate. Check out this

funny medley mix the LAist found, courtesy of JibJab.

It's all the past Presidents singing the Star Spangled Banner in a medley type of a way. The

Houstonist was very clever and created a downloadable iTunes Mix for the long

weekend that really rocks. Some favourite activities for sure will be going camping, having a BBQ and getting out of town. How will you celebrate?

Tons of

good, new music on July's iMix: including Scottish band The Fratellis,

the latest (and catchiest) single from Australia's John Butler Trio,

and a track from Ryan Adams' new album Easy Tiger (which was just

released last week).

America, of course, was "born" as a country on the day the U.S. Constitution became effective, which according to its terms was when the 9th state ratified it.

NowPublic is Rated PG-13

As far as online quizzes go, this one is a good one. If you go to Mingle2.com, you can enter the url of your site and it rates it according to a film rating, like your favourite movies would get. We're rated a PG-13, because our site contained the words dead (4x), porn (3x) and bomb (2x). So kids, some of our material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

Key to a good marriage? Share housework-AP

According to a Pew Research Center survey on parenting and marriage, having kids is considered less of a factor for a successful marriage than it was once thought. Instead, the study found that couples now rate sharing household chores, income and having a happy sexual relationship as more prominent factors to make a marriage successful.

The survey also found that, by a margin of nearly 3-to-1, Americans say the main purpose of marriage is the "mutual happiness and fulfillment" of adults rather than the "bearing and raising of children."
