1,683 guitarists play 'Smoke on Water'

More than 1,600 guitar players turned on their guitars and tuned up to play a rendition of Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City. They were trying set a world record by having the most people in one place, at one time playing the famous 70's guitar riff. The reason organizers chose "Smoke on the Water" was because it's one of the first songs many guitarists learn. At last count, 1,683 people participated.

The record had been 1,323 people playing the same song in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1994.
